Artist to watch: Baby Queens
Girl power is in. Groups like Little Mix and Fifth Harmony are enjoying tremendous success, songs about female empowerment shoot to the top of the charts like it’s nothing, and being a single lady has never been this cool. About to join this female fiesta are Baby Queens, an all-female band from Cardiff.
The story of Monique B, Cara Elise, Estelle Ios, Vanity Jay and Ruth Vibes – two sisters, two cousins and their adopted sister – started in 2013, when their first single ‘Red Light’ quickly won the attention of BBC Radio 1, earning the ladies the title of ‘Artist of the Week’ and plays across the station from the likes of Fearne Cotton and Greg James.
Since then, the band has been busy working on their debut album and performing around the country at festivals like Boomtown, T in the Park and Swn festival – BBC Radio 1’s Huw Stephens very own festival in Cardiff.
Their self-titled debut album is now finally ready to be heard and the lead single ‘Tired of Love’ will be released on September 9th, with the album release following on October 28th. The album, produced by Super Furry Animal’s Cian Ciaran, is a smooth mix of rock, hip-hop, soul, and reggae, with writing credits for all five members of the band.
With classic soul and R’n’B song writing mixed with present day sounds of British street genres, this album is set to push boundaries and surprise anyone who thought they’d seen enough of girl bands for the next decade or so.
Cara Elise, responsible for vocals and guitar, describes the songs on the album as being influenced by “basically anything that is heartfelt and soulful and stands for something positive”. “These are songs that reflect our love of music of all genres,” she adds. “We wanted to bring any musical differences that might exist between us and unite them. We think the music speaks for itself, uncompromised, accessible popular music.”
Lead single ‘Tired of Love’ delivers all of that, with its layered vocals, slick production and a rarely found balance: catchy, but not annoying. ‘Tired of Love’ will be stuck in your head for the rest of the day after just one listen – but in the best way.
