Karen Black was an American actress, screenwriter, singer, and songwriter. She was best known for her roles in films such as Easy Rider (1969), Five Easy Pieces (1970), The Great Gatsby (1974), Airport 1975 (1974), and The Day of the Locust (1975). She was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in Five Easy Pieces. Black was born in Park Ridge, Illinois, the daughter of Elsie Mary (née Reif), a nurse, and Norman Arthur Ziegler, an engineer and businessman. She had two older brothers, Robert and Charles, and an older sister, Elizabeth. Black began her career in theater, making her professional debut in 1955 at age 15 in a production of The Crucible. She went on to appear in a number of other productions, including The Great Gatsby (1974), Airport 1975 (1974), and The Day of the Locust (1975). She also appeared in a number of television series, including The Twilight Zone, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, and The Man from U.N.C.L.E. Black was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in Five Easy Pieces (1970). She also received a Golden Globe nomination for her performance in Airport 1975 (1974). Black died on August 8, 2013, at the age of 74, after a long battle with ampullary cancer.
